Because the wood is so resistant and durable, it generally requires little maintenance. It’s common for teak furniture to last for 70 years or more and to be passed on as hairlooms. If you keep it indoors, it’s possible to last even longer. If left in its natural state, teak wood is practically maintenance free. However, untreated teak furniture exposed to the sun will patina and turn a grey color. Although the process does not affect the strength and the quality of the wood, you can choose to prevent it by staining the furniture. A sealer can be used to prevent the sun from graying the furniture and the mold and mildew from attacking it. Sealers can be applied to both new and old teak furniture. The sealer is meant to preserve the color of the wood, although it can also change it, acting as both a protectant and a stain. It does not peel over time like varnish, it’s easy to apply and should be reapplied every year.
